Rose Costumes is a progressive, inclusive, LGBTQ+ owned and operated year-round costume rental shop serving local and regional theatres, schools, and community groups, as well as individual clients for Halloween, themed events, and special occasions. From Shakespeare to Murder Mystery parties, our shop helps bring characters to life.
Position Overview:
We’re looking for a skilled Costume Creatologist to join our creative and fast-paced shop. The ideal candidate will be responsible for constructing, altering, and maintaining costumes for rental and production use. While strong sewing skills are essential, knowledge of theatrical production needs—such as quick changes, durability, adjustability and character-specific alterations—is a major plus.
Key Responsibilities:
Perform alterations, repairs, and occasional construction of costumes for personal rental clients and theatrical productions
Help maintain and organize costume stock, including labeling, laundering, and light cleaning
Work with a wide range of garment styles and periods, from historical to fantasy and contemporary looks
Interpret alteration notes and measurements for fitting both individuals and cast ensembles
Support seasonal projects such as Halloween rentals, school productions, and themed events
Collaborate with staff to prepare costumes for outgoing rentals
Qualifications:
Proficiency in machine and hand sewing techniques
Experience altering garments of various styles and fabrics
Strong attention to detail and ability to meet production timelines
Comfortable working independently or as part of a team
Basic understanding of garment care and costume maintenance
Excellent organizational and communication skills
Preferred Experience:
Previous experience in a costume shop, theatre wardrobe department, or rental house
Familiarity with theatrical productions, costume design principles, or period garments
Ability to make pattern adjustments or work from patterns
Knowledge of costume-related accessories (e.g., hats, wigs, props)
